Where to Stay in Torres del Paine, Chile

Base Torres in Torres del Paine National Park

Few places in Patagonia compare to the rugged beauty of Torres del Paine National Park. From the towering granite peaks of Base Torres to the sweeping views of Mirador Británico, this vast and wild region will never leave you hanging with little to do.

I hiked the W Trek and marvelled at every corner. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my time in Patagonia. Whether you're planning a multi-day adventure on the W Trek or O Circuit, or doing a day hike to Valle Frances, choosing the right base can change your entire experience.

You can stay in mountain refugios and campsites along the trekking routes, book a lodge or hotel inside or near the park, or base yourself in Puerto Natales and explore on day trips. Each option comes with different costs, travel times and advantages.

In this guide, I'll break down the best places to stay in and around Torres del Paine, with recommendations for multi-day trekkers, day hikers and travellers looking for everything from budget-friendly accommodation to a little more comfort.

Quick guide to Torres del Paine

Where to stay Best for Main advantage
Inside the park W Trek and O Circuit hikers A network of refugios and campsites at every stop
Inside the park hotels and lodges Hikers seeking comfort and luxury An immersive experience with less need to change accommodation between excursions and hikes
Outside the park Road trips and independent travellers Travel into the park each day or take an excursion
Puerto Natales Budget-conscious travellers and day hikers More choice of accommodation and services, although roughly a 2-hour commute to the national park each way

Where to Stay for Multi-Day Treks

The two most popular multi-day hikes in Torres del Paine are the W Trek and the O Circuit. Both offer a range of accommodation options, depending on your budget and how much camping you want to do.

On both treks, you can camp with your own equipment, hire camping gear or stay in a dorm bed at one of the mountain refugios. My advice is to book well in advance. I got lucky being able to book last minute; however, during peak season, spaces can fill up very quickly.

You can read my full guide to hiking the W Trek here, where I cover the route and what to expect along the way.

My tip: Stay at Refugio Chileno for the Base Torres hike.

If you're planning to hike to the famous Base Torres viewpoint, I'd highly recommend staying at Chileno rather than Central, if it’s available. I found Chileno to be a small but cosy refugio, and its location means you can cut a couple of hours off the hike to Base Torres compared with starting from Central. It also allows you to start early and reach the viewpoint before hordes of day-trippers arrive.

When I changed my accommodation from Central, the staff were pretty chilled out about it, provided there was availability. However, I'd recommend arranging any changes in advance (if you need to) rather than trying to switch once you're there.

Booking the W Trek and O Circuit

Cost: $ – $$$

You can book both treks through the Las Torres website. The easiest option is to book a complete programme, as this ensures all your accommodation dates are coordinated. However, it does tend to be more expensive as it’s all-inclusive.

If you're happy camping and would prefer to book each campsite separately, you'll need to use two providers. As a guide, camping starts at around $70 USD per night in Francés, $90 USD in Central and $13 USD in Paine Grande. These prices don't include extras such as meals or camping equipment.

For Francés, Central, Cuernos, Serrano and Chileno, check availability on the Las Torres website.

For Dickson, Perros, Grey and Paine Grande, you'll need to book through the Vértice website.

Note that Serrano, Dickson and Perros can be booked on the O Circuit only.

Best Hotels and Luxury Lodges inside Torres del Paine

Best for: Travellers who want a more immersive, comfortable stay, with day hikes, guided excursions, and the chance to explore Torres del Paine on a more flexible schedule.

Staying inside Torres del Paine lets you explore the national park by day and return to a warm bed, a good meal, and a cosy place to relax in the evening. However, the location you choose matters. Some hotels are right beside popular hiking trails, while others are better placed for exploring the western side of the park.

Here are some of the best options, from luxury all-inclusive lodges to more affordable stays with incredible views.

Near the Base Torres trailhead

cowaboys and horses from Hotel Las Torres ranch

Cost: $$$$$

Hotel Las Torres is ideally located for exploring the national park, with hiking trails right outside the hotel. It’s ideal for getting an early start for your hike to the Base Towers.

Famous for its cowaboys and horse-riding excursions, you can spend a morning on a ranch and go for a ride. There’s also a wellness centre and cosy lounges to relax after a long day of hiking, as well as an unforgettable Patagonian lamb experience. It’s on the pricier side, but the location and range of activities make it a memorable place to stay. You might even see a puma pop by!

Handy tip: you can add this hotel as an additional night on the W-Trek.

EcoCamp Patagonia

Cost $$$

Located close to Hotel Las Torres and the trailhead for the Base Towers, EcoCamp Patagonia offers a unique glamping experience in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park.

With cosy geodesic domes and incredible views of the surrounding mountains, the camp offers guided treks and excursions, as well as yoga sessions for a more relaxing start or end to the day.

It’s a more affordable alternative to neighbouring Hotel Las Torres, but the domes can book out months in advance, so it’s worth planning ahead.

Explora en Torres del Paine - All Inclusive

Cost: $$$$$

Set on the shores of Pehoé Lake, Explora has incredible views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. The all-inclusive stay includes guided hikes, horse riding and other excursions, with knowledgeable guides helping you plan each day around what you want to see and do.

Back at the lodge, you’ll find a spa and meals included, making it a good option if you want to focus on exploring Patagonia without having to organise everything yourself.

Hostería Pehoé

Cost $$

Nestled on Isla Notros, a private island in Lake Pehoé, Hostería Pehoé is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks in every direction. The lodge has a more traditional, rustic feel and is one of the more budget-friendly options for staying inside Torres del Paine.

Nearby trails include Mirador Cuernos and Mirador Cóndor, and you can catch the catamaran across Lake Pehoé to access hikes around Glacier Grey or start the W Trek. If the Base Towers are on your itinerary, note that the trailhead is around a 45-minute drive away, so having a vehicle or arranging transport should be considered.

Glacier Grey W Trek

Glacier Grey

Near Grey Lake

Hotel Lago Grey

Cost $$$

If I ever return to Torres del Paine, this is the hotel I’d treat myself to. Hotel Lago Grey looks out onto Glacier Grey, where you might spot icebergs breaking away and drifting across the lake.

One of the main reasons to stay here is to take a boat excursion across Grey Lake, offering a closer look at Glacier Grey and its immensity. The view on the W Trek was incredible, but up close would be something else!

Handy tip: If you’re doing the W Trek, you can start the trek at Hotel Lago Grey, take the ferry across to Grey Refugio and stay at Paine Grande. From there, you can continue the trek to your next booked refugio or campsite.

If you’re planning a winter visit, the lack of crowds and scenery can be mesmerising.

Where to Stay Outside Torres del Paine National Park

Best for: If you’re looking for a wilderness retreat, there are several lodges just outside Torres del Paine National Park that offer a secluded stay, with guided excursions and personalised itineraries. If you’re renting a car, it’s typically a short drive to the park entrance.

East of Torres del Paine

This area is ideal if you’re looking for a remote experience, with wide-open landscapes and stays that focus on local culture and guided exploration. It’s home to Laguna Azul, which offers stunning views of the Base Towers in the distance.

Awasi Patagonia

Cost $$$$$

Set within a private reserve overlooking Torres del Paine, Awasi Patagonia is an exclusive retreat with just 16 stand-alone villas, each offering views of the surrounding mountains.

Here you’ll have the freedom to explore Patagonia at your own pace. Each villa comes with a private guide and a 4x4 vehicle, so excursions can be tailored to your interests, whether you want to hike through the national park or explore the more remote corners of the reserve.

Estancia Cerro Guido

Cost $$$$

Set in a beautiful rural landscape with sweeping views, Estancia Cerro Guido offers a more personal stay and a strong connection to the region’s local culture.

The lodge organises a range of tours and excursions, with knowledgeable guides in both English and Spanish, to help you discover more than just the national park.

The lodge is a good base for exploring the national park, and they can help organise excursions and share advice on the surrounding area. Excursions include hikes to the Base Towers, Glacier Grey, Valle Frances and Fly Fishing.

Pampa Lodge Patagonia

Cost: $$$

Also set in the Rio Serrano area, Pampa Lodge Patagonia has beautiful mountain views from every corner. Natural materials and handcrafted details give the lodge a rustic feel, while the cosy communal lounge and outdoor spaces are perfect for relaxing.

It’s a great option if you want to stay within a 5-minute drive of the southern entrance, in a more budget-friendly setting compared to staying inside the park.

Where to Stay in Puerto Natales

Best for: A budget-friendly place to stay when visiting Torres del Paine National Park. It’s a good option for day hikers planning excursions, as well as anyone tackling a multi-day trek who needs somewhere to stay before and after their hike, with a place to store luggage.

The main downside is the distance. It takes around two hours to travel between Puerto Natales and the national park, so day trips can mean a lot of time on the road. However, as the weather can be temperamental in Patagonia, it’s worth considering for anyone looking for flexibility and comfort, as you can easily switch your schedule if you have a bad weather day.

Tips for booking accommodation in Torres del Paine

Where to stay in Torres del Paine for day hikes

Where you stay will depend on your budget and how close you want to be to the hiking trails. Staying inside the national park gives you the most direct access to the trails, while accommodation just outside the park is a good option if you’d like to join guided excursions or drive yourself with your own itinerary.

If you’re looking for the most budget-friendly option, Puerto Natales is the best option if you’re willing to trade off a two-hour drive to the park coupled with some early starts.

Do you need to rent a car in Torres del Paine?

Outside of the main treks, it’s generally recommended to have a vehicle; however, it’s still possible to have a great time if you’re happy to join guided excursions or pay for organised transport.

That said, having a vehicle gives you more options to explore different parts of the park at your own pace. You can view more information on the types of vehicles you can bring here.

How do you book your Torres del Paine National Park entry ticket?

You need to book your park entry ticket separately from your accommodation, unless your package or excursion includes it. If you’ve booked an all-inclusive program through the Las Torres website or an organised trip, check with the provider to confirm whether your park entry is covered.

If you’ve booked accommodation independently through the Las Torres and Vértice websites, or you’re staying at a hotel or lodge inside or outside the park and exploring independently, you’ll likely need to buy your own ticket. You can purchase it through the official Pases Parques website.
