Best Things to do in Lake Bled, Slovenia
Lake Bled feels like it belongs in the opening chapter of a fairytale. Surrounded by picturesque hills, a clifftop castle, and the peaks of the Julian Alps, it's easy to see why it's a must-do on anyone’s Slovenia itinerary.
Whether you're visiting for a day or staying a little longer, Lake Bled offers far more than its famous postcard view. From scenic hikes and lakeside swimming spots to amazing restaurants and panoramic viewpoints, there's plenty to keep you busy.
Here are the best things to do in Lake Bled, whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or more of an excuse to spend more time enjoying one of Slovenia's most beautiful destinations.
Walking to the best viewpoints in Lake Bled
I love a good view, and I especially love a hike. One of the best things about Lake Bled is that the most spectacular viewpoints are all within a short walk or hike.
Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica and Velika Osojnica
These are the most famous viewpoints overlooking Lake Bled. If you're short on time, I'd recommend hiking to Ojstrica Viewpoint. It's a relatively short 1.6 km out-and-back hike and offers the most picturesque view of the lake, island church, castle, and surrounding mountains.
During my stay, I hiked all three viewpoints, and each offers a slightly different perspective over Lake Bled. You can read my full guide to hiking Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica, and Velika Osojnica here.

Walk around Lake Bled
One of my favourite things to do in Bled was to walk around the lake. I did it twice! 😅
The full circular route is around 6 km and usually takes between 1.5 and 2 hours at a leisurely pace. One side of the lake is lined with restaurants, cafés, and tourist shops, while the quieter side feels much more peaceful, with swimming areas, rowing clubs, and uninterrupted views across the water.
Every section of the walk feels a little different, and it's an easy way to spend an afternoon taking in the scenery.
Getting started on my first walk around the lake
Straža Viewpoint
The trail begins near the summer toboggan run and climbs through the forest to several viewpoints overlooking the lake. At around 646 metres high, it offers a different perspective from Ojstrica and is often quieter too.
I had planned to do this hike on my final day in Bled, but I changed my mind at the start of the trail after I heard a thunderstorm on its way. It's definitely on my list for next time.🙃
Visit Bled Castle
If you're not looking to hike, Bled Castle offers one of the best views over Lake Bled.
It's one of Slovenia's oldest castles and provides panoramic views of Bled Island, the surrounding mountains, and the turquoise waters below.
Inside, you can visit the museum to learn about the history of Bled and the castle itself. There's also a restaurant and terrace overlooking the lake, making it a great place to stop for lunch, dinner, or simply enjoy the view.

Swim in Lake Bled
A swim in Lake Bled is one of the best ways to enjoy the lake, especially after a sweaty day of hiking.
There are designated swimming areas around the lake, and the most popular spots are near Velika Zaka and around the area in front of Wine Bar & Restaurant Čarman.
I went for a morning swim at the end of May and, while the water felt cold at first, it was really refreshing once I got in.
While I was there, I met three British women who regularly swim outdoors throughout the winter in the UK. They had swum all the way to Bled Island and even completed a couple of laps around it before landing on the island to explore. You'll need to be a relatively decent swimmer to do this, but it made for a pretty memorable Lake Bled story!
If you don’t want to swim to Bled Island (and I don’t recommend it), you can also take a boat across the lake to the island.
Mornings in Lake Bled
Visit Bled Island and the Church of Assumption
As you walk around Lake Bled, you'll probably hear the church bells ringing throughout the day. At first, I assumed there must be a wedding taking place, but it turns out it's tourists making a wish and ringing the bell inside the church!
The three British women who swam to Bled Island told me that visitors can pay to ring the bell themselves, which certainly explained why I kept hearing it!
To reach the church, you'll need to climb the island's 99 steps before exploring the grounds and enjoying the views back towards the lake.
Postcard perfect!
Rent a bike
One of the best ways to explore Lake Bled is to hop on a bike and explore the town and its surroundings. There are a diverse number of cycling routes for all levels, and easy routes you can take between villages and Lake Bled, as well as challenging routes that give you amazing views of the Julian Alps.
You can visit bled.si for more information on cycling routes.
Day trips from Lake Bled
Vintgar Gorge
Just a short distance from Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) feels like a completely different world.
Wooden walkways wind through narrow limestone cliffs as the emerald waters of the Radovna River rush below. At 1.6 km long, it's an easy and accessible walk, making it one of the most popular day trips from Bled.
At the end of the gorge, visitors can choose between two walking routes back to the entrance area or the shuttle bus stop.
I found it an easy half-day addition to my Lake Bled itinerary. The only suggestion I’d make is to do it on a sunny day because that’s when you can see all the amazing colours. 🙃
You can read my guide to visiting Vintgar Gorge here.

Lake Bohinj
If you're looking to escape some of the crowds, Lake Bohinj tends to be the quieter alternative to Lake Bled
Nestled within Triglav National Park, this alpine lake is surrounded by stunning forests and mountains. Popular activities include swimming, paddleboarding, paragliding, boat trips, and hiking.
You can also walk the entire lake in around 2-3 hours, following an 11 km circular route with beautiful views throughout.
I hiked to Vogar Viewpoint. It's a moderately challenging uphill battle, but the views were spectacular and watching the paragliders take off was so much fun.
You can read my guide to hiking Vogar Viewpoint here.
If you want the views without the hike, there are cable cars that take you to the top on the other side of the lake near Ukanc.

Activities in Lake Bled
Lake Bled Toboggan
I watched a few people do this and was very tempted to try it myself, until I heard a thunderstorm rolling in. It honestly looked like so much fun!
Just a short walk from the lake, you can take a cable car up and ride the toboggan back down with views over Lake Bled on the way. Keep in mind that during summer, it can get busy, so expect some wait time if you're visiting during peak hours.
Overlooking Lake Bled, you can take the cable car up and come down tobogganing. Keep in mind that in the summer, the wait times can be long.
Stand-up paddleboarding
One of the best ways to experience Lake Bled from the water is by stand-up paddleboard.
There are several rental spots around the lake where you can hire a board for a couple of hours and paddle out towards Bled Island. It’s a calm and scenic way to explore the lake at a slower pace.
Chillin’ on the lake
Ziplining
With one of the longest ziplines in Europe, if you have some adrenaline to unleash, this might be for you. The views are incredible, and it looks like so much fun!
You can find out more at Zipline Dolinka Bled.
Chill out with the swans
The swans definitely stole the show during my time at Lake Bled.
They’re completely unbothered as they glide through the waters.
Restaurants in Lake Bled
Wine Bar & Restaurant Čarman
This was my favourite place to eat in Lake Bled. Located right by the lake, the terrace offers beautiful views across the water while you dine.
The garlic soup was absolutely divine, and if I'd stayed in Bled any longer, I would have happily returned for another meal.
Pizzeria Rustika
After a long day hiking to Vogar Viewpoint, this was exactly what I needed. A hearty meal!
The pizzas are generous, filling, and perfect after a day of exploring. If you're craving comfort food, this is totally worth it!
Kavarna Park
No trip to Bled would be complete without trying the famous Bled cream cake.
I sampled mine at Kavarna Park after a tasty lunch, where you can enjoy a slice alongside views over the lake from the terrace.
Restaurant & Wine Bar Murka
I visited Murka on my first evening in Bled. And it was the perfect introduction to the town.
The risotto was amazing, and the menu offers a good mix of options.
Bled Cream Cake
I need to figure out how to make this…
Where to stay in Lake Bled
For my visit, I stayed within walking distance of Lake Bled, which worked out great for exploring both the lake and doing day trips. I did find accommodation in Lake Bled tends to get booked up relatively quickly, so it’s a good idea to look into it once you have our dates.
Here are some accommodation options to consider for your stay in Lake Bled.
Where to stay in Bled for the best views
Lakeview Villa Bled
Lakeview Villa Bled offers apartments with terraces or balconies and is conveniently located closer to the lake. Amenities include a spa and wellness centre, sauna, and fitness centre.
Čarman House
With beautiful views over Bled Island and a private pier in front, this is a great place to stay if you’re looking to stay right next to the lake and have amenities close to you. There are several rooms available; however, they do get booked up quickly!
Hotel Starkl - Heritage & Unique
With gorgeous views, Hotel Starkl - Heritage & Unique is a great place to stay if you’re looking for somewhere with lakefront views and is in the perfect location for exploring Lake Bled.
Where to stay in Bled near amenities
Castle way Apartments Tamy
In a great location very close to the lake and within a few minutes walking distance to all the bars and restaurants, the apartments are spacious and well-equipped.
Vila Rina
Vila Rina offers beautiful apartments with gardens and terraces. The location is within walking distance to the lake, bus station, restaurants and bars.
Where to stay outside of Lake Bled
Apartments & Rooms Aleksandra
I loved my stay here! Zdenka, the host, was really communicative and provided a lot of detailed information. She even gave me a lift to the train station on my departure.
The property is located in a quiet residential area of Bled, about a 15-20 minute walk from the main bus station and approximately 45 minutes on foot from Vintgar Gorge. It worked well as a base for exploring both Bled and the surrounding area.
Apartments Roberta
I considered staying at Apartments Roberta, but it booked out quickly and wasn't available for my travel dates.
Located a short drive from Bled, it's a good option for a quieter area outside the centre. I loved the complimentary bicycles, which make it easy to explore the surrounding area using cycling routes.
Handy tips for visiting Lake Bled
ATM Withdrawals
Many ATMs around Lake Bled charge withdrawal fees, often starting from around €5.
During my visit, I managed to make a free withdrawal using a European debit card at the Bankomat GBKR next to Market by the Lake.
If you're travelling from a Eurozone country, it may be worth bringing some cash with you to avoid unnecessary withdrawal fees.
I didn’t really have any luck with a Revolut card, unfortunately.
Don't try to do everything
If you're only visiting for a day or two, I'd focus on Lake Bled itself and the surrounding area.
It can be tempting to fill your itinerary with day trips to places like Postojna Cave, but one of the things I enjoyed most about Bled was slowing down and spending time around the lake. Whether it's a morning walk, a swim, or simply enjoying the views from a restaurant terrace, giving yourself time to soak it all in is part of the experience.
