Where to Stay in the Soča Valley, Slovenia
The Soča Valley was one of the highlights of my trip to Slovenia. I originally planned my visit around hiking the Soča Trail and exploring the beautiful mountains near Bovec. However once there, I quickly realised that the valley offers so much more than hiking trails.
With its turquoise river, wild peaks and an abundance of outdoor activities, the Soča Valley is one of the best places to stay in Slovenia for hiking and exploring the sweeping landscapes.
Where you stay can make a big difference to your experience. Bovec is the main hub for outdoor adventures, while Kobarid and Tolmin offer a slower pace and their own distinct ambience. Further north, the upper Soča Valley is surrounded by the imposing peaks of the Julian Alps, while the valley gradually opens out into rolling hills further south.
While the towns may each offer something different, they all share one thing in common… the rushing and beautiful turquoise Soča River zigzagging through stunning landscapes.
In this guide, I'll take you through the best places to stay in the Soča Valley and help you decide which towns are the right base for your trip, depending on your travel style and what you want to experience.

What towns are in the Soča Valley?
The main towns in the Soča Valley are Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin and Kanal. There are also plenty of smaller villages where you can stay and explore.
How long should you spend in the Soča Valley?
If you want to see the main highlights, it’s a good idea to spend at least two to three days. Although you could easily spend a week in the region and still have plenty more to see.
Can you travel to the Soča Valley using public transport?
Yes you can, assuming you're flexible! 🙃
To get to the Soča Valley, there are direct buses from Ljubljana to Tolmin, and from Tolmin you can continue to other towns in the valley, including Kobarid and Bovec, all via Nomago.
I arrived in Bovec from Bled using train and bus connections.
During the summer, additional hop-on hop-off bus services connect many of the main attractions in the towns. For the most up-to-date info, check the Soča Valley website.

Bovec
Best for hiking and adventure
This is where I chose to base myself during my time in the Soča Valley, and I loved it! Bovec has an energetic and vibrant feel to it due to its reputation as a hub for outdoor adventure. Even walking out of the supermarket, I found myself stopping to admire the towering, rugged peaks surrounding the town.
It’s fairly compact with a wide range of accommodation options. However, as one of the more popular towns, I found that many places were already booked up months in advance for spring and summer.
What I loved most about Bovec was the vibe. After spending the day exploring the mountains, people gather with a drink at one of the bars in town. It's pretty chilled and feels really welcoming 🙃.
A lot of the valley's most popular outdoor activities, including rafting, kayaking, rock climbing and cycling, can be arranged from Bovec. It’s also a convenient base for exploring the Soča Trail, with seasonal buses making it possible to travel further along the river and hike different sections of the trail.
If it's your first time visiting the Soča Valley, I’d really recommend heading to Bovec for a few days. It offers the best combination of sweeping mountain views and fun outdoor adventures.

Budget-friendly places to stay
Sontis Home
Located just outside of Bovec, this cosy apartment has beautifully decorated interiors with views looking out to the mountains and sheep.
Mountain view apartments to stay
Nomad 27, Bovec
I stayed in an apartment on the edge of Bovec with views of the rugged peaks. It had everything I needed for a comfortable stay, including a washer and dryer. There is also parking available if you're travelling by car.
The apartment is around a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre, and two supermarkets are located nearby, making it convenient for self-catering.

Soca Valley Suites
Located in the same building as Nomad 27, these apartments are finished to a similar high standard and offer many of the same amenities.
If you choose to stay here, I'd recommend booking one of the mountain-view apartments rather than a unit overlooking the supermarket. The views across the surrounding peaks are one of the property's biggest selling points and were one of my favourite things about staying in this part of Bovec.
House Elipsa
In a great location, it has apartments offering terraces, stunning views, and free private parking. It’s a really good option for anyone looking to stay a little closer to town.
Lazy Goose Charming Apartments Bovec
In the heart of Bovec, you’re close to all the restaurants and cafes that Bovec has to offer. It’s also relatively close to the bus station and has free parking available.
Boutique hotels to stay
Hotel Soča
Comfortable and modern, there’s a spa and wellness centre on site to help guests relax after a day of exploring the Soča Valley. Located in the centre of Bovec, it’s close to all the restaurants as well as being a peaceful retreat away.
Boutique Hotel Dobra Vila Bovec
With stylish and quirky rooms, you’re in a quiet setting yet only 5 minutes away from the centre. The rooms are spacious, and many offer amazing views of the mountains.
Kobarid
Best for history and hiking
Further down the Soča Valley, Kobarid offers its own flair. Known for amazing food, rich history and beautiful surrounding landscapes, it’s a great base if you want to combine hiking and outdoor activities with a better understanding of the region's past.
Fly fishing, mountain biking and kayaking are popular in the area. You’re also spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful waterfalls and scenic hikes.
The Kobarid Museum provides in-depth information about the history of the region and its role during the First World War. It shares details on the battles fought in the area in relation to the landscapes in the valley.
A popular walk is the Kobarid Historical Trail, which connects several of the area's must-dos, including the Kobarid Museum, Napoleon's Bridge and the Kozjak Waterfall.

Budget-friendly places to stay
Apartment Honey Bee with Sauna
This little gem… yes, you read that correctly, has a sauna! There are shops, bakeries and restaurants on the same street, and you’re within walking distance of many attractions.
Cosy homes and apartments to stay
Cottage Kobarid
A cute and cosy cottage, the location is ideal if you have a car. There’s a lovely garden to enjoy evenings on the terrace or relax during the day under the shade.
Apartma Morizna
Located on the edge of town, overlooking a pasture, the centre of Kobarid is within walking distance. Spacious and thoughtfully decorated, it has a homely and peaceful ambience.

With a spa bath in each apartment, it’s an amazing place to come back to and relax after a long day of hiking or exploring the Soča Valley.
Tolmin
Best for exploring the lower Soča Valley
Tolmin is a great place to stop off if you're travelling without a car, with direct buses from Ljubljana and onward connections to Bovec.
The town is best known for Tolmin Gorges, a meeting point of two wild and fierce rivers. During the summer, you can use the Tolmin Shuttle Bus to easily explore the gorge and surrounding area.
Other nearby attractions include Beri Waterfall and Lake Most na Soči.

Hotel Eden
Recently renovated, rooms are comfortable, modern and tastefully furnished. It’s a peaceful place to stay in the centre of Tolmin.

With homely furnishing and a modern feel, it’s in a really good location close to the river.
Soca River Resort - Riverside Bed & Breakfast
Located just outside the centre, it’s a comfortable, modern hotel in beautiful surroundings.
Kanal
Best for a calmer and more relaxed pace
Known for its strong cultural heritage and medieval Old Town, Kanal offers a slower pace and beautiful scenery along the Soča River.
Kanal is a lovely base if you're looking for a quieter place to explore for a day or two.

Soca Guesthouse
Modern and neatly furnished, the hotel is located in a historic building close to the Soča River. Rooms are cosy, and there’s a bakery just around the corner.
Rooms Aura Kanal
A comfortable guesthouse experience, the room is modern, clean and with air conditioning.
In summary
If it's your first time in the Soca Valley, I’d recommend staying a few nights in Bovec, especially if you’re looking for adventure along with alpine views. It's a great base for exploring the upper Soča Valley, offering plenty of activities, places to stay and eat.
If you prefer a calmer vibe and want to combine hiking with history, Kobarid could be a better fit. Tolmin is best for exploring the lower Soča Valley, while Kanal is ideal if you're looking for a slower and more chilled pace.
