Hiking to Virje Waterfall: A Rainy Day in Bovec
When planning my trip to Bovec, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the weather. I was travelling in late spring, and mountain weather can change quickly.
Part of the reason I booked a comfortable apartment with mountain views was to give myself a backup plan in case I spent a day watching thunderstorms roll through the mountains.
Thankfully, I was lucky with the weather for most of my trip. The first day was perfect for hiking the Soča Trail, with a mix of clouds and sunshine and turquoise/emerald waters throughout the Soča River.
The following day was a different story.
I woke up to heavy rain and thunderstorms that lingered throughout the morning. But by early afternoon, the clouds began to clear, and patches of blue sky appeared. Rather than attempting a longer mountain hike, I visited the tourist office in Bovec to ask for recommendations.
The suggestion was simple… hike to Slap Virje.
If you're looking for an easy walk in Bovec after rain, or wondering what to do on a rainy day in the Soča Valley, this trail is a great option. The route is straightforward, and it can easily be completed in an afternoon.
Slap Virje Trail Details
Difficulty: Easy
Route: Circular
Distance: 9.5 km
Duration: 2-3 hours
Map: AllTrails (Note: The AllTrails hiking route continues beyond Slap Virje. Once you’re there, you can either come back the way you came or follow the signs to do the circular route.)
Hiking to Slap Virje
I started the trail near the roundabout opposite the petrol station in Bovec. The route begins on a forest path with a few gentle uphill sections, although the overall walk felt relatively easy.
As I made my way through the woods, I passed a field of curious Bovec sheep and followed a well-signposted trail. The path is mostly rocky, so decent footwear is recommended, especially after rain.
The Bovec sheep are unique to the Soča Valley and provide milk for the Bovec Sheep Cheese.
One of the highlights before reaching the waterfall is Plužna Lake (Plužensko jezero). Even on a cloudy afternoon, the lake had a deep green colour that stood out against the surrounding forest.
From there, I continued towards the car park. After crossing a bridge, there is a steep path leading down to the waterfall. However, another hiker I met along the route suggested walking up to the car park first and taking the main path down to the falls instead, as the steeper trail was extremely slippery after the morning's thunderstorms.
When I reached Slap Virje, the waterfall was in full force. The morning's rain had dramatically increased the flow, and I was completely soaked within minutes. It also felt pretty cold near the base of the falls.
While I didn't get to see the famous emerald-green colours, I experienced a completely different side of Slap Virje. On one hand, it was a bit moody, but on the other hand, it felt like a fierce waterfall after a storm.
And honestly, it was pretty fun to see!

Returning to Bovec
On the return journey, the signposted route initially takes you up towards the main road, where you can enjoy another viewpoint overlooking the waterfall from above.
From there, the trail continues through the forest. However, after around five minutes of walking, I realised just how muddy and slippery the path had become. Rather than continue through the forest, I decided to take a slightly longer route back to Bovec via the main road.
It was a lot easier to walk on, and also offered much better views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. While the forest route would have been more direct, I found the road more scenic, especially after the rain had cleared.

Can you swim at Slap Virje?
Swimming is not allowed at Slap Virje. The water is extremely cold, even in late spring and summer, and the conditions can change significantly after heavy rainfall.
Other waterfalls near Slap Virje
A nearby waterfall is Slap Boka, which stands at 106 metres high. It’s located around 4 km from Slap Virje and can be reached on foot, depending on your route and energy levels.
I didn’t include it on my own hike as I was quite tired after walking the Soča Trail, but it’s a great optional add-on if you have the time and the conditions are good.
Seasonal buses to Virje Waterfall
If you're visiting during the summer months, seasonal hop-on hop-off buses operate throughout the Soča Valley, making it easier to access popular hiking trails and attractions without a car.
Before travelling, check the Soča Valley website for the latest info, as seasonal services can change from time to time.

Apartment views in Bovec on a rainy day 🙃
I stayed in an apartment on the edge of Bovec with views of the surrounding mountains. It had everything I needed for a comfortable stay, including a washer and dryer. There is also parking available if you're travelling by car.
The apartment is around a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre, and two supermarkets are located nearby, making it convenient for self-catering. It was also really conveniently located for this hike!
Soca Valley Suites
Located in the same building as Nomad 27, these apartments are finished to a similar high standard and offer many of the same amenities.
If you choose to stay here, I'd recommend booking one of the mountain-view apartments rather than a unit overlooking the supermarket. The views across the surrounding peaks are one of the property's biggest selling points and were one of my favourite things about staying in this part of Bovec.

In the heart of Bovec, you’re close to all the restaurants and cafes that Bovec has to offer. It’s also relatively close to the bus station and has free parking available.
Is Slap Virje Worth Visiting?
Yes, go for it! It was a great walk for a rainy day in Bovec.
The short walk and peaceful forest setting make it an easy addition to any Bovec itinerary.
Whatever the weather, you'll get your own version of Slap Virje, and that's part of what makes it such a great place to visit.
