Famous for its pink-tinged sand, crystal-clear turquoise water and shallow lagoons, Elafonisi Beach (also spelt Elafonissi) is often seen as one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. It's one of those places that seems to appear on every bucket list of must-do spots in Greece.
But is Elafonisi Beach actually worth visiting?
Having seen the beach for myself, my answer is a little more complicated than the usual glowing travel recommendations. While the scenery is very beautiful, the experience can vary dramatically depending on when you visit. During the height of summer, the crowds can take away much of what makes Elafonisi special. Visit in the shoulder season, however, and you might find a very different beach altogether.
So, is Elafonisi worth adding to your Crete itinerary? Here's my honest take, including when I'd recommend visiting, when I'd skip it, and whether the journey is worth the effort.

Is Elafonisi Beach worth visiting? My verdict
If you've already got your heart set on visiting Elafonisi Beach, you might want to stop reading here! But if you're still on the fence about whether it's worth adding to your Crete itinerary, this one's for you…
This is the kind of picture you normally see of Elafonisi. I could almost convince you that I had the entire place to myself. 😉
This is the reality of visiting Elafonisi...
Yep, it's PACKED!
For context, I visited in early July. Overall, I found Elafonisi overcrowded, and the famous pink sand was pretty much non-existent.
With so little space to go around, people can also get a little territorial about their patch of sand. If you enjoy having a bit of space and privacy when you're at the beach, Elafonisi in peak season probably isn't for you. We bumped into a really rude couple who were getting very territorial about a tree.
If you're visiting during peak season and want to avoid the worst of the crowds, I'd suggest getting there reeeally early or considering another beach altogether.
My apartment host actually recommended her favourite beach, Kedrodasos Beach, as a quieter alternative. It's much less touristy than Elafonisi, although there are fewer amenities nearby, so make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks.
Unfortunately, we were too tired after our Elafonisi visit to make the trip, but it's on my list for next time!
Now, if you're visiting during the shoulder season, it's a different story. With fewer crowds, you'll have more space to enjoy the beach, and you're more likely to notice the subtle pink hues in the sand that make Elafonisi so famous.
My biggest tip? Get there early. Especially if you plan to get a sunbed! An early start will give you the best chance of enjoying the beach before it gets busy.
So, is Elafonisi Beach worth visiting? To be honest, it's not somewhere I'd rush to visit during peak summer. However, a visit during the shoulder season, when the crowds have thinned out, I can imagine it's worth the trip.

What makes Elafonisi worth visiting?
The famous pink sand
One of the biggest draws of Elafonisi is its famous pink sand. While I didn't get to experience much of this myself, there are certain areas of the beach where the sand takes on subtle pink hues, caused by tiny particles of crushed shells.
You might have to look a little harder to spot it when the beach is busy. Your best chance is to explore the quieter stretches of sand near Elafonisi Island or visit earlier in the morning.
As for the bright, bubblegum-pink sand you see zooming around the internet, I wouldn’t expect that! 🫠
Turquoise water and shallow lagoons
If there's one thing I absolutely loved about Elafonisi, it was the water. The turquoise sea is gorgeous, and in July, it was wonderfully warm for a swim.
The shallow lagoons are another big draw, particularly for families. There are places where the water is calm enough to paddle through, making it a lovely spot for a relaxed beach day.
Elafonisi Island
One of the highlights of visiting is Elafonisi Island, which you can wade across to when the water is low enough. Walking along a narrow strip of sand, you’ll reach the island, which is also part of a protected natural environment with native plants and wildlife. It’s probably worth doing this short walk for a less crowded experience.
Sunbeds and umbrellas
Amenities: Sunbeds, parking and beach facilities
One of the things that makes Elafonisi so popular is the range of amenities. You'll find public toilets, changing cubicles and a small beach restaurant where you can grab something to eat. You can also rent sunbeds if you'd prefer a more comfortable spot to spend the day. At the time of our visit, sunbeds cost around €15 to €20. If you're keen to hire one, I'd recommend arriving early, as they can get snapped up quickly.
As you walk down from the car park, you'll pass a small supermarket with an ATM, as well as a few restaurants. We ate at Antonias Panorama Restaurant, where I had the dorada (sea bream), which was delicious.
I would also recommend bringing some cash with you. The restaurant had an issue with the signal in the area and couldn’t accept cash payments. Thankfully, the signal came back, as the ATM was also out of service that day.
One thing to bear in mind is that there's very little natural shade at Elafonisi. If you're planning to spend a few hours here, I'd recommend bringing your own umbrella if you need it.
How to get to Elafonisi Beach from Chania
This was the day we rented a car and set off on a road trip to the other side of Crete from Chania. The roads were generally in good condition, and the route was easy enough to follow using Google Maps. The drive took around 1 hour 45 minutes. As we wound our way through the twisting mountain roads, the scenery just kept getting better and better the closer we got to the sea.
One funny thing happened when we picked up our rental car. The rental guy asked us, "Are you sure you don't want to go anywhere else apart from Elafonisi Beach?" Looking back, we probably should have taken the hint!
We parked around a 15-minute walk from the beach and made our way down to Elafonisi. Parking cost us around €5, and there are several parking areas.
If you don't fancy driving, there's also a bus from Chania to Elafonisi. When we visited, it departed at 9 am and returned to Chania at 4 pm. We felt this was a little too restrictive, so we opted to rent a car instead. For buses, you can check the latest departure times and availability on the KTEL website. (Note: this is the correct link, but for some reason the website goes out of service from time to time.)
There are also several tours available, including this one that combines a visit to Elafonisi Beach with Cretan wine tasting.

When is the best time to visit Elafonisi Beach?
I think the best way to explain this is with a little table:
| Month | My take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| May - June | Worth considering | Generally quieter than peak summer; however, the water is cooler. |
| July - August | I'd avoid it if you’re happy to go to another beach | Busiest tourist period. If you go, go early! The water is lovely for swimming. |
| September - October | Best time to visit | Potentially fewer crowds later into September and October, and water is likely to be warm. Note that the weather can be less predictable in October. |
We perched ourselves in front of this lagoon. There were fewer people here.
Are there less crowded beaches to visit in Crete?
If you're looking for a quieter alternative to Elafonisi, Kedrodasos Beach (10 minutes away) is one worth considering. My apartment host recommended it to us as a less touristy beach nearby, although it has fewer facilities than Elafonisi.
Looking back, I do wish we'd made the effort to visit Kedrodasos too!
If you do visit Kedrodasos Beach, or find another beach in Crete that you think is worth visiting, let me know in the comments below. I'd love to hear your recommendations for next time!
