Where to Stay in Lima: The Best Neighbourhoods
If there’s a city in South America I dream of returning to again one day, it’s Lima.
Why?
The foodie scene…
While for some travellers, Lima might be a transit hub on the way to Cusco and the rest of Peru, I think the city deserves a couple of nights, or three... or four 😉. With its vibrant culinary scene, historic architecture, Pacific coastline and walkable neighbourhoods, there’s plenty to keep you busy.
From the crashing waves of the Pacific hitting the charcoal-coloured cliffs to beautiful sunsets along the Malecón, here are the neighbourhoods I’d consider when choosing where to stay in Lima.
Spoiler: there are two areas I'd really recommend, plus a third I'd consider if you're returning to Lima.
Quick summary of the best areas to stay in Lima

Taking a morning stroll
Where to stay in Miraflores
This is where I chose to base myself, not once, not twice, but… three times.
As a solo traveller, I enjoyed wandering with my camera in hand, exploring the neighbourhood, and watching beautiful sunsets with surfers riding the waves from the Malecón.
I wandered through Kennedy Park, indulged in delicious Peruvian coffee and browsed the shops at Larcomar. But honestly, one of my favourite things about Miraflores was being by the ocean.
Going down to the Malecón, chilling in the sunshine and listening to the waves crashing against the cliffs was the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Miraflores became somewhere I returned to again and again after my hikes and treks through Peru.
If you're visiting Lima for the first time, want to be close to the coast, and like having plenty of restaurants, cafés, museums and shops within easy reach, Miraflores is a great base.
Here are some places in Miraflores worth checking out:
For boutique hotels
Humano, Lima, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel
Beautifully designed, it’s a couple of blocks from Kennedy Park and has several amenities including a pool.
Hotel Antigua Miraflores
A charming boutique hotel in a historic building, nestled in a quiet and secure area in the heart of Miraflores. Tastefully decorated rooms, handcrafted furniture, and plenty of character make it a stylish and comfortable stay.
Hotel Indigo Lima Miraflores
Elegant and stylish, the restaurant serves Peruvian cuisine. It’s close to all the restaurants and shops and has modern amenities.
For budget-friendly
The Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast
If you're looking to get your own private room, this friendly little B&B might just be perfect for you. Great rooms in a central location within walking distance of many sites in town.
Pariwana Hostel Lima
Reasonably priced, it's centrally located in Miraflores and sociable without being a party hostel.
An artistic haven, Barranco
Where to stay in Barranco
Hip, trendy and artsy, I loved this neighbourhood of Lima.
I didn't stay in Barranco myself, but I spent time wandering around and loved its street art, cafés and chilled atmosphere. Whether you're crossing the famous Bridge of Sighs or stopping for a coffee, Barranco is a great place to explore on foot.
And with a buzzing nightlife, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.
This would be my second choice after Miraflores. If you like a more bohemian atmosphere and want to be somewhere with lots going on, Barranco could be a great alternative.
Here are some places in Barranco worth checking out:
For boutique hotels
Casa Cáceres
In a central location, the rooms are clean and modern, with historical details.
Villa Barranco by Ananay Hotels
In a restored mansion from the 1920s, it’s located close to the ocean on a quiet street.
For budget-friendly
Viajero Lima - Barranco
With beautiful historical architecture, it’s in a really good location, and the walls and ceilings are stunning.
Where to stay in San Isidro
San Isidro offers a calmer and more residential side of Lima in the business sector.
You won't be right on the doorstep of the Malecón like you are in Miraflores, but if you're looking for somewhere a little quieter and less focused on tourists, it can be worth considering.
San Isidro is also home to some of Lima's renowned restaurants, including Astrid y Gastón, so be sure to make reservations in advance.
Here are some places in San Isidro worth checking out:
Hyatt Centric San Isidro Lima
A beautiful 5* hotel, it’s a cosy and upscale experience.
Swissotel Lima
Offering a luxurious experience, it has amazing facilities including a spa.
Historic Centre of Lima
What about staying in Lima's historic centre?
I haven't included Lima's historic centre as one of my main recommendations because, while I really enjoyed spending a day wandering around and admiring the colonial architecture, I heard mixed reviews about staying after dark. Maybe one day when I’m a more seasoned Lima visitor 😉
Summary of the Best neighbourhoods to stay in Lima
For me, I’d happily base myself in Miraflores again. I loved having the Malecón on my doorstep and being within a few minutes’ walk to the coast.
If you want somewhere more artsy and lively, I'd look at Barranco. And if you want something calmer and more residential, San Isidro is worth considering.
