Where to Stay in Lima, Peru: Best Areas

views over Lima, Peru

If there’s a city in South America that has more to do than meets the eye, it’s Lima.

While for some travellers, Lima might be a transit hub on the way to Cusco and the rest of Peru, I think the city deserves a couple of nights, or three... or four 😉. With its vibrant culinary scene, Pacific coastline and walkable neighbourhoods, there’s plenty to keep you busy.

However, navigating a large city and finding a safe neighbourhood can be challenging when visiting somewhere new. I’ve narrowed it down to a select few, so hopefully that decision is easier for you.

Here are the neighbourhoods I’d consider when choosing where to stay in Lima.

Spoiler: There are two areas I'd really recommend, plus a third I'd consider if you're returning to Lima.

Taking a morning stroll

Where to stay in Miraflores

This is where I chose to base myself, not once, not twice, but… three times.

As a solo traveller, I enjoyed wandering with my camera in hand, exploring the neighbourhood, and watching beautiful sunsets with surfers riding the waves from the Malecón.

I wandered through Kennedy Park, indulged in delicious Peruvian coffee and browsed the shops at Larcomar. But honestly, one of my favourite things about Miraflores was being by the ocean.

Strolling down the Malecón, relaxing in the sunshine and watching the crashing waves of the Pacific hitting the charcoal-coloured cliffs was the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

Miraflores became somewhere I returned to again and again after my hikes and treks through Peru. Whether it be for some self-care, a need to rest or to plan my next stop.

If you're visiting Lima for the first time, want to be close to the coast, and like having plenty of restaurants, cafés and museums within easy reach, Miraflores is a great base.

Here are some hotels in Miraflores worth checking out:

For boutique hotels

Humano, Lima, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

A stylish, contemporary hotel with thoughtfully designed rooms, just a couple of blocks from Kennedy Park. With a pool and an on-site restaurant, it’s a convenient base for exploring Miraflores while having somewhere to relax after a day out.

Hotel Antigua Miraflores

A charming boutique hotel in a historic building, nestled in a quiet and secure area in the heart of Miraflores. Tastefully decorated rooms, handcrafted furniture, and plenty of character make it a stylish and comfortable stay.

Hotel Indigo Lima Miraflores

An elegant and modern hotel right by the Malecón and Larcomar shopping centre, putting oceanfront walks, stylish shops and restaurants on your doorstep. The restaurant is a highlight, serving Peruvian cuisine, while the spa offers a relaxing retreat with a sauna, steam room and heated pool.

The Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast

If you're looking to get your own private room, this friendly little B&B might just be perfect for you. Great rooms in a central location within walking distance of many sites in town.

A budget-friendly hostel in a central Miraflores location, with a sociable atmosphere that doesn’t revolve solely around partying. Regular activities and a rooftop terrace make it a good option for solo travellers looking to meet people, while the coworking space is handy if you need to get some work done.

An artistic haven, Barranco

Barranco neighbourhood Lima

Where to stay in Barranco

Hip, trendy and artsy, I loved this neighbourhood of Lima.

I didn't stay in Barranco myself, but I spent time wandering around and loved its street art, cafés and chilled atmosphere. Whether you're crossing the famous Bridge of Sighs or stopping for a coffee, Barranco is an easy place to explore on foot.

And with a buzzing nightlife, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.

This would be my second choice after Miraflores. If you like a more bohemian atmosphere and want to be somewhere with lots going on, Barranco could be a great place for you.

Here are some hotels in Barranco worth checking out:

For boutique hotels

Casa Cáceres

A traditional-style boutique hotel set in a beautiful mansion in the heart of Barranco. The rooms combine historic details with modern comforts, while the garden and rooftop offer space to unwind. It’s also within walking distance of the neighbourhood’s many restaurants and cafés.

Villa Barranco by Ananay Hotels

Set in a restored 1920s mansion on a quiet street in Barranco, this boutique hotel combines historic character with elegant interiors. Close to the ocean, it also has a garden where you can enjoy breakfast, making it a lovely base for exploring the neighbourhood.

For budget-friendly

Viajero Lima - Barranco

Set in a striking historic building, this hostel stands out for its beautiful architecture, with ornate ceilings and beautiful interiors. Located in the heart of Barranco, it offers comfortable rooms, a lively atmosphere and organised activities for meeting other travellers.

Where to stay in San Isidro

San Isidro offers a calmer and more residential side of Lima in the business sector.

You won't be right on the doorstep of the Malecón like you are in Miraflores, but if you're looking for somewhere a little quieter and less focused on tourists, it can be worth considering.

San Isidro is also home to some of Lima's renowned restaurants, including Astrid y Gastón, so be sure to make reservations in advance.

Here are some boutique hotels in San Isidro worth checking out:

Hyatt Centric San Isidro Lima

A stylish five-star hotel offering an upscale stay in San Isidro, ideal for business travellers or anyone looking to treat themselves to a little luxury. With a rooftop pool, city views, a bar and a restaurant catering to both local and international tastes, it’s a comfortable place to unwind after a day exploring Lima.

Swissotel Lima

A luxury hotel in San Isidro, ideal if you’re looking for a high-end stay with plenty of facilities. Unwind in the spa, indoor pool or sauna, keep up your routine in the gym, or enjoy the extensive breakfast buffet before heading out to explore Lima. There are also several restaurants nearby to choose from.

Historic Centre of Lima

Historic Centre of Lima

What about staying in Lima's historic centre?

I didn't include Lima's historic centre as one of my main recommendations because, while I really enjoyed spending a day wandering around and admiring the colonial architecture, I've heard mixed reviews about staying there after dark. Maybe one day when I’m a more seasoned Lima visitor 😉

What is the best part of Lima to stay in?

If it’s your first time in Lima or you’re short on time, Miraflores is a good choice. It sits between Barranco and San Isidro, with the Malecón offering a scenic 45-minute walk to Barranco. San Isidro is around an hour away on foot, depending on where you’re staying in Miraflores. If you don’t fancy the walk back, both neighbourhoods are just a short taxi ride away.

How many days in Lima are enough?

If you’re short on time, 2–3 days are enough to see the highlights of Lima. Take a walking tour, browse the Inka Market, visit the Larco Museum and, most importantly, make time for the food. From street food tours to world-renowned restaurants such as Central, Maido and Astrid y Gastón, Lima has plenty to keep you busy.

If you have 4–5 days, you can explore beyond Lima with a tour of the Historic Centre and its Catacombs, or head further afield on a day trip to Paracas and Huacachina. The latter combines a boat trip to spot sea lions and penguins in their natural habitat with a sunset dune buggy ride and sandboarding in the desert.

Summary of neighbourhoods in Lima

The best neighbourhood of Lima to stay in depends on your travel style and what you’d like to experience.

For comfort and ease, I’d happily base myself in Miraflores again. I loved having the Malecón on my doorstep and being within a few minutes’ walk to the coast. If you want somewhere more artsy and lively, I'd look at Barranco. And if you want something calmer and more residential, San Isidro could be a good fit for you.

Happy and safe travels x
